This site offers an explaination of the tonsils and adenoids. It explains what they are and what their purpose is. It also explains how tonsils are removed and complications of a tonsillectomy. I consider this to be a decent site, but not as good as my major site. It also contains advertisements.

This is a summary for my major website review. The main focus of this website is to help people to learn more about their tonsils and adenoids, to answer any questions they may have about they subject, and to help them to find physicians in their local area. This website was created by and is sponsored by MedtronicENT. Its main strengths are that there are lots of great links on the website to different topics/subjects, it has a glossary of terms (incase you don’t know what the word means), and it has lots of great information about tonsils and adenoids and the removal of them. The weaknesses of the website are that there aren’t enough pictures, at least not for me. There are however a few, but mainly just of surgical instruments and not of the actual tonsils or surrounding area themselves.
The first sub-page on the website http://www.itonsils.com/tonsil_adenoid_anatomy.html is great because it fully describes the tonsils and adenoids and tells what purpose that they serve. Every person is born with tonsils. There are three types of tonsils: Palatine tonsils, Lingual tonsils, and Pharyngeal tonsils also called adenoids. The palatine tonsils are the ones that are most commonly removed by the doctor during a tonsillectomy. The adenoids are made up mostly of lymph tissue and are located high in the throat, behind the nose. Both the tonsils and the adenoids help the body’s immune system by fighting off germs, bacteria and viruses that enter the body through the nose and mouth.
The second sub-page on the website describes why they are removed. You can go into that sub-page and click on to the different links to find out about the just the Adenoids Only: Otitis Media, Adenoiditis, and Sinusitis. Or you can click on to the different links in Tonsils Only: Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Tonsillitis, and Bleeding Tonsils. There are also more in Tonsils & Adenoids: Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Failure to thrive, Abnormal chin and facial growth, Suspicion of Malignancy, Dysphagia, Speech impairment, and Halitosis. And if you click on some of those sub-links it’ll bring you to more pages. For instance, if you go into the sub-page Why are they removed? and click on to Tonsils Only and click on to the Tonsillitis link, it’ll bring you to http://www.itonsils.com/tonsils_tonsillitis.html . That page has lots of great information on it. It has causes of tonsillitis, symptoms of it, how to diagnosis it, and different treatment options.
Another sub-page that is on the website describes how they remove the tonsils and adenoids. That sub-page is also like the one above, it has many different links that you can click on and go to and find out more information about the different procedures that are used. The three main sections when you first go into that sub-page are: Adenoidectomy, Tonsillectomy, and Combined Technique. As you go into these different links there are sub-links that you can click on to, just as I described in the above paragraph. For instance, if you go into the sub-page Adenoidectomy and then click on to Suction Cautery, it brings you to http://www.itonsils.com/adenoidectomy_suction_cautery.html and it gives you a brief explanation of the procedure with this picture. Another picture on the website is on the Cold Steel Tonsillectomy sub-page, it’s a picture of Tonsil forceps- they are used in the complete removal of a persons tonsils.
I liked this website because it has lots of great information and different areas to go into about the tonsils and adenoids. It was presented very well and it was easy to understand and follow. I liked the fact that it had a glossary of terms that you could refer back to incase of not knowing the meaning of a word, which was very important to me. I was a little disappointed at the fact that there were not as many pictures as I had hoped there would be, but the ones that were on the website were good (more surgical pictures than anything). I hope that whomever shall read this will be able to understand a little bit more about your tonsils and adenoids and what they do.

*This site is posted by the AAO-HNS(American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery). The section that is focused on in my review is the Ears, Nose, and Throat section. The AAO-HNS posted this site so that parents and people can understand when to see a doctor and what to expect. This site offers a way to tell if a problem you are having is serious and whether or not to see a doctor.
*If anyone has any questions on tonsils or adenoids this is a great site. This site provides a visual picture on the passageways of the nose and throat. This helps people that are not in the medical field to better understand how things can affect the tonsils and adenoids. Along with the picture labeling the adenoids, collapsible airway, soft palate, uvula, and tonsils it gives a short description of what affects these areas and how it happens.
*This site also allows people/parents to see if their symptoms/they’re child’s symptoms are serious enough to visit a doctor. With this, it explains what to expect at the doctor’s office. They list the primary methods used to check for tonsil and adenoid problems. They also list tonsillitis and enlarged adenoid symptoms.
*This ENT Health Website also offers a glance at before and after surgery for tonsils and adenoids. They explain to you how to talk to your child in this situation and how to prepare for surgery. They explain further what to expect during and after surgery.*I think this is an awesome site for anyone with tonsil or adenoid problems. It provides an in depth look at what symptoms to look for, what to expect at the doctors exam and surgery. This site should help anyone with any questions about tonsils, adenoids, or even surgery for these problems.

MayoClinic website is a very dominant major website that can provide an abundant amount of information at a click of your mouse.The websites copyright is 1998-2005 and the information is provided by Mayo-Clinic's staff of doctors and physicians.The main topics of the website are diseases and conditions of tonsillitis, and other aliments.The site provides easy access of the different articles that provide information on basic tonsil knowledge.

~http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/tonsillitis/DS00273/DSECTION=8& is another link that I liked because of the in depth information that you can understand quite easily.It shows the different medications and reasons why you would have to have surgery on your tonsils.Its has links easily accessible to an avid computer user.
I really like this site , and the quality of its information provided.The Mayo Clinic is a well respected institution in the medical field.It is easy to find information on anything that you may want to know about, when it comes to the neck and throat region.I would recommend this website to a scholarly student or a curious reader that just wanted to expand their knowledge of tonsils.

Mama's Health website is a decent minor website for the use of basic knowledge on tonsillitis and other aliments that would cause a sore throat.The website is a commercial site which offers many links to services and products that would help you cure your sickness.The website is formed by numerous companies trying to sell there product , which is updated weekly. http://www.tonsilfacts.org/googad/
This link is on the home page for tonsillitis and helps readers see "did you know?" questions that they might be concerned with if their child or even they might have to have a tonsillectomy.The link has many knowledgable facts on tonsillectomies in the united states.
I feel that this site is no more than a minor website to research tonsillitis , and has to many links to products and services.I would recommend this site to the curious reader and would not recommend it to someone that wanted in depth information about tonsilitis and other diseases of the head and neck region.

For any medical problem that someone is trying to look up I think Web MD is the place to be. Just on tonsils they have 6 pages of information for you. The information they give you is very extensive and in depth. They automatically give you links to other diagnosis if you have certain symptoms. Such as if you had swollen lymph nodes which is one symptoms of tonsillitis they give you link to other things that are caused by swollen lymph nodes. They also give you the whole reason and treatment for tonsillitis from why you have it to what you can do to make it go away. ( http://www.webmd.com/hw/health_guide_atoz/ut1057.asp?navbar=ut1027)

Web MD gives you extensive links to help you with your situation which is one of the main things I like about the site. It gives you information on what increase your risk of getting tonsillitis and other ear, nose, and throat complications. They offer doctor references and home treatment to when you should call a doctor. Another great thing about web md is that have sub links off their own links which benefits you greatly because if you can’t find what you’re looking for on their page they give you other options to go to. It’s not like some other sites that if you can’t find anything there they don’t give you other options.

Even thought web md is a great site and has truthful information there are some downfalls. Like the kids health page web md doesn’t off a lot of visual pictures to look at. They are very descriptive on everything but I think it would help a lot if they had some pictures. Also they have a lot of flash advertisements that takes the focus off the subject you are trying to look up. I think that is a downfall you wouldn’t want to be reading something and have a purple monkey flashing in the corner saying shoot me for free ipod. Overall if you and in depth coverage with many sub links to other sites and information on what you need then web md is for you.

The information found in kid’s health is a great website for people who don’t have much time to read through lengthy pages. It is very generalized and straight to the point. It is also great because it gives little side tabs that you can click for further information. The side tabs include related articles which give you information on what goes on the operating room and other throat malfunctions such as enlarged adenoids, and additional resources that include information on sleep apnea that is sometimes caused by tonsils. The page is simple enough for kids to understand yet knowledgeable enough to put parents at ease if there child is going to have a tonsillectomy. Having my tonsils removed I have personal experience and I know that the information sated on this page is true. The only down fall to this web page is that it doesn’t offer many pictures to view. This is a summary for my minor website review. The main topic of this article is the removal of tonsils. The Harvard University Gazette published this in their paper on November 21, 2002 and the Copyright date is 2005 by the President and Fellows of Harvard College. Its main strengths are that it clearly goes over the facts of tonsil removal. Its weaknesses are that it should have medical references/websites that you can refer to for more information.
The main focus of this article is "Research finds benefits for adults who have tonsils removed: Take fewer sick days and less medication than those who leave their tonsils in." The article's most interesting positive feature is the statistics that are used. For instance, "Before tonsillectomy, patients spent an average of six and a half weeks a year taking antibiotics, whereas after tonsillectomy the same patients averaged less than a day per year on antibiotics." Also, "Before tonsillectomy, patients averaged six doctor's visits a year for tonsil and throat problems, compared with the 0.3 visits a year on average for those after tonsillectomy." These figures were astonshing to me. I was also surprised by the cost of a tonsillectomy, $2,500. But I was thereafter reassured by reading, that some insurances do cover the cost of the surgery. Whew! I thought that the article was very well written and that it was detailed in describing its point objective.
As many others, I myself know how it is to suffer from chronic sore throats and doses of antibiotic treatments from the doctor. It surely isn't fun by any means. You can't eat solid foods, it hurts to swallow, all you want to do is sleep ( cause when you do there's no pain ), and you feel like you're gonna die. You then remember the old family remedies for sore throats, my mom's: warm apple juice, vinegar, and honey then gargle. So for all you out there who suffer from sore throats because of these things we call tonsils, just remember to take in all of your options and good luck!
